Breaking Barriers: Overcoming Challenges as a Women in STEM

As a women in a STEM field, I have faced a number of challenges and obstacles throughout my career. From navigating a male-dominated work environment to dealing with unconscious bias and discrimination, it has often been an uphill battle.

However, despite these challenges, I have been determined to succeed and make a meaningful contribution to the field. Here are some of the strategies I have used to overcome the obstacles I have faced as a women in STEM.

Seek out mentors and role models: Having supportive mentors and role models has been invaluable in my career. I have been fortunate to work with a number of incredible women and allies who have provided guidance, support, and encouragement. Seek out mentors who can help you navigate the unique challenges of being a women in STEM, and who can provide you with the tools and resources you need to succeed.

Build a strong support network: In addition to mentors, having a strong support network of peers and colleagues is essential. Join professional organizations (like Solaris), attend conferences, and participate in networking events to connect with other women in STEM. Building a community of supportive and like-minded individuals can help you feel less isolated and more empowered.

Advocate for yourself: As a women in STEM, it is important to be your own advocate. Speak up when you have ideas, and don't be afraid to ask for what you need. Don't hesitate to bring up issues of diversity and inclusion, and work to create a more supportive and inclusive work environment for yourself and others.

Stay resilient: The road to success in STEM is often not a smooth one. There will be setbacks and disappointments along the way. Staying resilient and focused on your goals is key. Keep learning, keep growing, and keep pushing forward.

Embrace your unique perspective: As a women in STEM, you bring a unique perspective to the table. Embrace this and use it to your advantage. Leverage your experiences and insights to bring fresh ideas and solutions to the table, and work to create a more diverse and inclusive field for all.

By following these strategies, I have been able to overcome the challenges I have faced as a women in STEM and make a meaningful contribution to the field. While there is still much work to be done to create a more diverse and inclusive STEM community, I am proud to be a part of this important movement and am excited to see what the future holds.
